This Saturday, the boys varsity soccer team at Bishop Machebeuf High School will have their first shot at becoming state champs.
After almost making it to the finals last season but being cut short by a loss in the semi-finals, the team persevered and played even harder this season and is now heading to the state championship in Colorado Springs to face off against Crested Butte and make a long-overdue and much-deserved play for the trophy.
The team finished their season with an impressive 16-2-0 record under the leadership of coach Harold Siegel. It was a 6-0 win during a Nov. 4 game against Telluride that earned them their spot in the state finals.
Their hard work is starting to pay off, and their players are being recognized as exceptional athletes. BMHS Senior Jorge Valdres was named Player of the Year for the Mile High Soccer League.
The success of the BMHS boys soccer team proves that Catholic high schools are just as capable of building quality athletic programs as their public counterparts. In fact, through their witness to Christ, the boys soccer team has a unique opportunity to show how just how intertwined faith and sports are. They take this opportunity after every game when the team kneels in gratitude to Christ and honors the Virgin Mary by chanting the Salve Regina together.
