Denver rally to support federal Pain Capable act

Students for Life of America are hosting a “Summer of Life” rally at the Colorado State Capitol building from noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 26 related to federal Senate Bill 1670, the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protect Act.

“This act (click here to read the bill) speaks up for those who can’t speak for themselves and protects the health of women when it comes to late-term abortion,” said Lauren “Lo” Martinez, Rocky Mountain regional coordinator for Students for Life of America. “Colorado senators need to hear from you.”

Among the scheduled speakers are Lynn Grandon, program director for Respect Life Resources of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Denver and executive director of Lighthouse Women’s Center; and Marilyn Musgrave, vice president of Government Affairs for the Susan B. Anthony List and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives; among others guests.

The United States is one of only seven countries that allow abortion past 20 weeks, Martinez said.

“Thanks to scientific research and advancing technology we know the inhumane treatment of babies in the womb, who after 20 weeks (about five months gestation) can feel pain,” Martinez said. “It is time that the law reflects our society’s desire to protect the innocent. Introducing this bill, already passed by the House (H.R. 1797), is step one in allowing a fair debate in the deliberative body on the issue of late-term abortion in this country.”

H.R. 1797, the similar bill in the U.S. House of Representatives, was supported by the U.S. bishops.

“The proposed ban on abortions at 20 weeks after fertilization is a place to begin uniting Americans who see themselves as ‘pro-life’ and as ‘pro-choice,’” Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston and chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, wrote in a June 14, 2013 letter. “On behalf of our country and the children whose lives are at stake, I urge you to support the common-sense reform offered (by H.R. 1797).”

The Summer of Life rally will be held on the west steps of the Capitol at 200 E. Colfax Ave. in Denver.
